When asked in history lessons at school what made the year 1492 so special, almost every student knows the answer. It was the year that Christopher Columbus discovered America. The word America has different connotations in Europe and in America itself. When people in Europe talk about America they almost invariably refer to The United States of America, with Washington, D.C. as its capital. In Europe people are not even aware of the geographical term North America, which includes Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. So when asked about Christopher Columbus and his discovery they believe that he landed somewhere near Boston.

My wife and I have lived in Eleuthera for over 8 years and we’re still loving it. It didn’t take us long to realize that the moderate subtropical climate of the Bahamas would be just right for us. Yes, we stay here every Winter and sometimes even in the Summer because we own a home and a cottage in Central Eleuthera.

While the beaches of the Bahamas are the premier tourist attraction, there are many more things to do if you travel inland. On Abaco you can visit the Abaco National Park, which is a 20,500-acre national park dedicated to preservation of the native plants and animals of the Bahamas. It is one of the only places in the Bahamas where you can see the endangered Bahama Parrots. These beautiful emerald colored birds call the park home. Also on Abaco you can see the wild horses of Abaco. These horses are probably descendants of the horses Columbus brought on his trips to the New World. They are housed in a preservation area in the pine forests of Abaco. Also on Abaco you can explore the Hope Town Lighthouse. This candy-striped lighthouse was built in the early 1860s. It is still lit by a kerosene lamp.

I spent a month last year in the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, never heard of it? It is a long thin and somewhat unpopulated island on the far eastern side of the Bahamas. I have to say that one of the most enjoyable aspects of the trip was the Bahamian food, of course I love that about every place I visit! I love trying out all the local dishes and the Bahamas was no exception.

The Bahamas is a chain of islands comprising 5,358 square miles, located 40-50 miles east of Florida, it has a population of 300,000. Most Bahamians live in two major urban centers: Nassau (its capital) and Freeport.

The Bahamas is a member of the British Commonwealth, but maintains absolute independence in government matters (Government of the Bahamas). It is well served by International Accountants, International Banks, and long established Law Firms, and an advanced telecommunications service.
