Atlantis Bahamas

In 1940, clairvoyant (a person with abnormal power of seeing in the mind what is happening or what exists a distance) Edgar Cayce predicted that the lost continent of Atlantis would start to rise again in the vicinity of The Bahamas in 1968 or 1969. Since then, 37 years have passed and many major events have happened, such as The Great Britain granted The Bahamas internal self-rule in 1964, Huber Ingraham became prime minister in 1992, and Perry Gladstone Christie elected prime minister in the 2002 general election. The lost continent of Atlantis, however, has still not been found.

Although the Bahamas may be most well known for its casinos and night life, it also offers many options for families. The beautiful islands really do offer something for everyone and for all ages. For the younger children in the family, the beach is the perfect location. The water is perfect for swimming, and the soft beaches are perfect for running up and down where the surf meets the land. When the children grow tired of playing in the water, parents can help their children in one of the most beloved beach pastimes: sand castle building.

In 1492, on San Salvador island in the eastern part of the Bahamas, Christopher Columbus hit land. Upon seeing his surroundings, it is believed that Columbus uttered the words “baja mar”, which means shallow water or sea. This island, surrounded by shallow water basically took as it’s name, the words that Columbus uttered, but more commonly spoken as the Bahamas.

When people think about the history of the Bahamas, they think of Christopher Columbus landing there and claiming it for Spain in the late 1400s. This is entirely true. But the Bahamas also had an ancient civilization that dates back as early as 300-400 AD, which may have come from Cuba and counted on the ocean for their food. This has been discovered by recent archaeological digs on the islands. Later an advanced civilization for their time settled on the Bahama Islands. They were the Lucayan Indians. In the 10th century the Lucayans left their home in the Lesser Antilles to escape their enemies. The Carib Indians were fierce warriors and were also cannibals but the Lucayans were peaceful people and were farmers. Lucayans were very advanced in politics and religion. They used tools and lived in thatched homes. The Lucayans were a thriving colony of 40,000 when Christopher Columbus landed. It was then decided that these gentle people would be enslaved to work in mines and it only took 25 years for the entire Lucayan people to be wiped out completely. The tribe suffered from foreign diseases, slavery and hardship.

There are beautiful sea scapes of underwater reef structure, chutes and crevasses, and we have always gone here for the bigger critters anyway. It became a regular sight on each and every Nekton dive that we would see Rays and Sharks below the boat and zooming in and out of our view.

The Bahamas can be a playground for children of any age. Anyone that likes searching for just the right seashell, building sandcastles, swimming with dolphins or playing in the ocean waves will have fun here.

Despite the fact that water-related activities are the most apparent enticements, these tranquil and welcoming islands also offer an assortment of rainy-day options, above all in Nassau and on neighboring Paradise Island.
